Unilever Targets to Double the Use of Recycled Plastics Over the Next One Year

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The multinational consumer goods company Unilever announced its intention to reduce the use of virgin plastics by 50%. The company aims to double the use of recycled plastics over the next one year.

The company confirmed that 10% of its plastic footprint consists of post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR).It had recently increased the use of PCR to nearly 75,000 tonnes. The company targets to use at least 25% PCR by 2025. Earlier in October last year, the company had announced its commitment to reduce its annual plastic packaging output by 100,000 tonnes over a period of five years.

Unilever had recently unveiled new innovations and packaging solutions, as part of its journey to achieve its goals. It had allocated funding for various projects aimed at transitioning from fossil-fuel-based carbon from its Euro 1 billion Climate and Nature Fund. It had announced plans to replace 100% of the carbon in its cleaning and laundry products. In addition, it had recently introduced plastic tubs consisting of recycled plastic.

Alan Jope, Chief Executive, Unilever said that throwaway culture tends to damage the planet. The industry must stay focused on reducing the amount of plastics used in products so as to enable rapid transition to a circular economy.

The company remains hopeful of achieving its goal of collecting and processing more plastic than it sells by 2025.
