Unilever, Viridor Signs Five-Year Supply Contract for Recycled Plastics

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Unilever and Viridor Resource Management has entered into a five-year contract to boost use of recycled plastic. Under the agreement, Unilever has committed to secure recycled plastic material from Viridor’s plastics reprocessing plant in Avonmouth. The deal comes in the light of Government’s move to impose tax on recycled packaging that uses less than 30% recycled content starting April 2022.

Unilever, in a press statement, noted that the company is committed to increase its use of recycled plastic in its products. However, the shortage of high-quality recycled content has always been a challenge for the company. The new collaboration with Viridor is likely to lead to a more circular market, it noted.

Keith Trower, managing director, Viridor Resource Management said that the contract demonstrates the commitment of both the companies in helping the UK achieve its recycling and sustainability targets. The Avonmouth plant is a key step in the company’s plastic recycling strategy, he noted. Once fully operational, the plant will be capable of producing nearly 60,000 tonnes of recycled PET, HDPE and PP per year.

Both Viridor and Unilever are founding members of the UK Plastic Pact- a collaborative initiative aimed at creating circular economy for plastics by tackling the scourge of plastic waste.
