SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The study conducted by Uswitch suggests that UK is all set to overtake Norway to become the world’s largest e-waste contributor by 2024.
Currently, Norway produces most e-waste. The country’s per capita e-waste generation stands at 26 kilograms. In second place is the UK with a per capita e-waste generation of 23.9 kilogram, just higher than Switzerland with 23.4 kilogram per capita. Alarmingly, the UK illegally exports approximately 40% of its electronic waste to other countries. The studies warn that UK’s e-waste could surge to 55,000 tonnes by 2030.
The continuation of upward trend in e-waste generation in the UK will make it the topmost contributor to e-waste among global countries as early as next year. Meantime, Norway’s take-back scheme is projected to help the country in actively improving its e-waste management. Also, Switzerland too has such take-back scheme in place, the study report noted.
The e-waste recycling rate in Norway stood at 43.9% in 2018, whereas that for the UK was only 31.2% in 2021.
The UK government plans to hold consultation on improvements to WEEE waste management system, which will primarily focus on reforms and government legislations that are intended to boost recycling and reuse.
