SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Timber Trade Federation (TTF) held its spring Softwood Conference online on 31st March, 2021. The conference highlighted robust global demand for softwood. Also, it noted that the supply will continue to remain tight in the UK during the current year.
David Hopkins, CEO, TTF commented that the current situation should not be viewed as a temporary spike and that merchants and contractors should be prepared to see this as the new normal. The demand will outstrip supply for many more years to come. Hence, all supply chain participants must examine and redesign their strategies, in order to maintain their market leadership positions, he added.

Softwood Lumber Demand Continues to Remain High in the U.S. and Canada
The speakers at the conference highlighted growth in global demand for timber along with changes in the UK market dynamics due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The softwood demand continues to remain at record levels internationally. The imbalance between supply and demand is likely to persist, mainly due to shortage of additional sawmilling capacity to scale up production. The pricing in the UK is likely to be impacted by extremely high international timber prices.
The conference predicted around 4% growth for timber sales in the UK during the current year.
