SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has released the list of top 10 steel producing countries during the month of May this year.
China topped the list, with the country’s crude steel output totalling 90.1 million tonnes (Mt) during the month. However, the production recorded significant decline by 7.3% over the corresponding month a year before. The cumulative output by the country during the initial five-month period of the current year stood at 444.6 Mt, marginally higher by 1.6% over the prior year period.
India’s estimated output, at 11.2 Mt, recorded a modest surge by 4.1% over May last year. The Japanese output dipped sharply by 5.2% during the month to total 7.6 Mt. The U.S. produced 6.9 Mt of steel, down by 2.3% year-on-year, said worldsteel data. Russian crude steel production was estimated at around 6.8 Mt, significantly higher by 8.8% year-on-year.
The sixth largest steel producer in the world was South Korea. The country’s steel output recorded nominal decline by 0.1% over the previous year to 5.8 Mt in May 2023. The Iranian steel production increased by 8.8% to total 3.3 Mt. The German output, at 3.2 Mt, was up marginally by 0.2% year-on-year.
Turkiye recorded largest decline in steel output over the year. The country’s output witnessed 10.4% dip to 2.9 Mt. Meantime, the last in the list was Brazil, with a production of 2.8 Mt, which is down by 5.5% over the previous year.
