Tolko to Build New Energy Plant at High Level, Alberta Lumber Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Tolko Industries Ltd has announced its decision to build a new energy plant at the High Level, Alberta lumber mill. According to company press release, the construction works are expected to commence next month. The plant is expected to become operational by June next year. The construction of the new energy plant is considered as the first important step towards permanent decommissioning of its beehive burner at the facility, the press release noted.

Dave Gillespie, Plant Manager at Tolko’s High Level mill expressed great excitement in bringing the project to the community. The project is a part of the company’s commitment to its sustainability efforts and also to the community. The proposed energy plant will reduce the carbon footprint at the mill, Gillespie added.

The new plant would be beneficial in several ways, he noted. Firstly, the use of state-of-the-art technologies will help to minimize air emissions from the mill. Also, a good portion of the bark generated by the saw mill will go as feedstock to the new plant. Further, it will replace natural gas with bioenergy in the lumber drying process. In addition, the plant will supply green bioenergy to power the new pellet plant at the facility, which is expected to commence operations in 2020.

The Tolko press release noted that a discussion on the new energy plant will be held March 20, 2018 4.00-8.00 PM, at the Best Western Plus Mirage Hotel & Resort Banquet Room, High Level, Alberta. The session, open to public, will be attended by Dave Gillespie and Michael Towers, Tolko’s Manager of Energy and Environment, who in turn will answer questions about the new plant and its potential impacts on community.
