The Westervelt Co. To Construct New Lumber Mill in Alabama

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The proposed new lumber mill facility in Alabama is expected to generate more than 100 well-paid jobs in the region. This was disclosed in a news release by the Tuscaloosa-based The Westervelt Co., which plans to build the new mill.

The proposed mill will have a production capacity of around 250 million board feet per annum. According to the company, the new facility is still in its planning phase. The location and design of the lumber manufacturing facility is currently under preparation and is expected to soon receive final nod from the company’s Board of Directors.

The new mill is expected to complement the company’s flagship facility in Moundville, Alabama. The opening of the new facility will expand The Westervelt Co.’s lumber manufacturing capacity in south Alabama region. Further, it will help the company to offer better services to its existing and new customers. The expansion is also expected to take best advantage of its proximity to Alabama’s timberland and pellet facility.

Brian Luoma, Westervelt Co. president and CEO noted that the expansion of the company’s lumber business will be built on its long history in lumber manufacturing and environmental stewardship. The construction of the new facility is part of company’s effort to grow its lumber portfolio to cater to the growing demand from ever-expanding customer base. Luoma also stated that recruitment to various posts at the new facility is now open, to which locals are eligible to apply.

The Westervelt Co. was founded as Prairie States Paper Corporation by Herbert Westervelt IN 1884. After nearly 40 years, it moved to Tuscaloosa and was renamed as Gulf States Paper Corp. It changed its name to The Westervelt Co. in 2006. The company’s Moundville facility is considered as the second-largest southern yellow pine production facility in the entire United States of America.
