SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recent research studies conducted by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health warned on serious health impacts caused by emissions from the Tata Steel Dutch Steelworks. Due to emissions from the plant, the life expectancy of people in the vicinity of the plant are 2.5 months lower than the Netherlands average.

According to the Institute, the people living in close proximity to the steel plant are highly exposed to particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide. This could lead to diseases such as lung cancer for adults and asthma in children. Approximately 4% of the new lung cancer cases and 3% of the new asthma cases in children in the area are feared to be caused by plant emissions, the report said.
This is the first time that a research study has highlighted the impacts of harmful emissions from the Tata Steel plant.
The Dutch government, in a statement, called for significant improvement in living conditions on the North Sea coast region surrounding the plant. On the other hand, the company spokesperson said that the current emission levels are within permissible limit and that it expects to further reduce emission levels by the end of the current year, as a result of various projects which are under implementation phase.
