SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading steelmaker Tata Steel and Germany-based SMS Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on decarbonisation technology for steelmaking process.
The two companies have agreed to conduct technical discussions and an industrial demonstration of the electric-assisted syngas smelter (EASyMelt) technology developed by the SMS Group. The demonstration will be carried out at the Blast Furnace ‘E’ at Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur plant. The implementation of the state-of-the-art decarbonisation technology is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than half.
The technology produces syngas through reforming of coke oven gas, which in turn is injected at both shaft and tuyere levels. The gas injected at the tuyere level is further heated using a plasma torch system.
T. V. Narendran, CEO & MD, Tata Steel, said that the company is delighted to reaffirm its partnership with the SMG Group to access better technologies and processes to reduce our carbon footprint in a meaningful and consistent way.
Burkhard Dahmen, CEO of SMS group noted that the collaboration with a major steel producer like Tata Steel represents a significant milestone in the global transformation of steel making.
