Tanzania's Minister Hints at Revamping Scrap Metal Export System

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): George Simbachawene, Tanzania’s Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office, after inspecting the export of scrap metal at the country’s Dar es Salaam port, stated that further controls should be implemented in controlling the export of scrap metal from the country.

According to him, the current scheme results in huge profits to dealers, whereas the government is losing money in revenues. The current system is unfavorable to revenue collection due to non-issuance of receipts. He noted that all categories of scrap metal except cast iron should remain in the country, as the demand from domestic industries is forecast to witness significant surge in the forthcoming years.

The Minister called upon the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) to make use of its zonal offices, regional and district commissioners in conducting thorough inspection of export cargoes, in order to ensure that government doesn’t lose any more revenue via scrap metal export.
