Stora Enso Investment to Expand Skoghall Mill in Sweden

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  Stora Enso announced plans to invest in expansion of Skoghall mill facility in western Sweden. The EUR 97 million will boost board production at the facility. In addition, it will carry out a pre-feasibility study towards conversion of an idle line to a packaging board line in its Oulu, Finland site.

The investment in Skoghall is subject to environmental permits and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2023. It will drive profitable growth in segments such as liquid packaging board and coated unbleached kraft. The investment will boost packaging board production capacity at the facility by around 100,000 tonnes per annum, thus making the total capacity to exceed 900,000 tonnes per annum. It must be noted that the company had completed feasibility study announced in November last year.

The conversion is expected to further improve the site’s flexibility and competitiveness.

Announcing the decision, Hannu Kasurinen, EVP-Packaging Materials Division at Stora Enso noted that the two growth initiatives declared by it demonstrates the company’s ability to respond to the rising demand for sustainable packaging. It strengthens the company’s capability to produce high-quality and cost-competitive consumer board grades, he added.
