SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): steeluniversity has scheduled a webinar on the sustainability benefits of electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking. The webinar, which will be for a duration of one hour, will be held in English on 21st September, 2023 13:00 UTC. The speaker is Thomas Echterhof, Senior Researcher at RWTC Aachen University. The ironmaking process is one of the most carbon-intensive process, accounting for the largest share of carbon dioxide emissions in the entire steel industry. The webinar will cover various related topics including energy efficiency, resource efficiency and the carbon footprint of EAF steelmaking. It provides clear definition of concepts and a detailed discussion on various factors that influence sustainability. Furthermore, it will present options to boost the sustainability of EAF steelmaking.
Thomas Echterhof is Academic Director at the Department of Industrial Furnaces and Heat Engineering at RWTH Aachen University in Germany. For the past 14 years, he has been leading the research group on mass and energy balances with a special focus on resource and energy efficiency of EAFs and heat treatment processes. He has authored and co-authored more than 70 journal and conference papers.
