TOKYO (Scrap Monster) : According to the recent statistics released by the Japanese Ministry of Finance, the iron ore imports of the country during the period from January to March have gone up by 2.8%.
The country’s total import of iron ore during the initial quarter of the year was March was 32.4 million metric tons. The total imports have risen 2.8% when compared to the imports during the same period, the previous year.
The country’s primary import source during the first quarter was Australia. Australia exported 19.6 million metric tons of iron ore from Australia. The Japanese imports from Australia witnessed a jump of 6% year-on-year.
The second largest exporter of iron ore to Japan was Brazil. The total imports from Brazil to Japan amounted to 9.3 million metric tons. The imports from Brazil fell by 3.9% when compared to the imports during the first quarter in 2012.
The Ministry of Finance data shows that Japan’s iron ore imports during the month of March totaled 10.1 million metric tons. The imports during the month have declined by 5% when compared to the previous month. The imports are down 4.8% year-on-year.
The value of iron ore imports during March this year has sunk 20.3% to $107.3 million when compared to March 2012.
