SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Swedish steel producer SSAB announced that it has signed a letter of intent with Scania the world’s leading transport solutions provider, with the aim of decarbonizing all of its steel deliveries to Scania’s heavy duty vehicles by 2030. Furthermore, the move will accelerate Scania’s previously announced shift to a sustainable transport system.
The steelmaker will commence deliveries of fossil-free steel in small quantities in 2026, which it plans to ramp up rapidly towards the end of the decade. The SSAB Fossil free steel is manufactured using HYBRIT technology, which replaces coking coal with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen in steelmaking process.

The deal is considered as the next big step in the long-standing relationship between the two companies. It forms part of the plan by First Movers Coalition, in which both SSAB and Scania are members, to cut the carbon footprint in hard-to-abate sectors. The partnership will create early markets for innovative clean technologies.
Christian Levin, CEO at Scania stated that the company is glad and proud to have reached the agreement. The agreement is part of its efforts to collaborate with companies across the value chain, including SSAB which is at the forefront in the transition to a sustainable steel industry, Levin added.
