SRS Ballito E-Waste Recycling Facility Earns R2 Certification

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Sims Recycling Solutions (SRS) has announced that it has received prestigious Responsible Recycling (R2: 2013) Certification at its Ballito e-waste recycling site in South Africa. The company press release noted that Ballito is the first and only business in South Africa to receive R2 certification. The certification is given away in recognition for the highest environmental standards and exemplary employee health and safety levels maintained at the site.

Marc Affüpper, director of SRS, EMEA, in a statement, noted that the R2 certification of the Ballito electronic waste recycling site is expected to raise the bar for WEEE treatment companies in the country. Further, it demonstrates the company’s dedicated commitment to recycling end-of-life electronic equipment in the South African market. By emerging as the first organization in the region to receive the prestigious certification, the company now has got additional responsibility of establishing global criteria of operational standards.

John Lingelbach, executive director of SERI noted that the certification has elevated the Ballito facility as the leader of responsible recycling of electronics on the African continent. It emphasizes the highest level of employee health and safety, highest standards of environmental responsibility and utmost protection to data provided at the facility. The facility is also accredited for ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification programs, Lingelbach added.

The prestigious R2 certification standard is managed by SERI, an ANSI-accredited 501(c)(3) non-profit standards development organization.

SRS had recently announced major expansion at its Eindhoven, Netherlands e-waste recycling facility. The expansion included development of space for new building, addition of new sorter lines that employ latest technologies to separate metals and plastics from waste stream.
