Spike in U.S Raw Steel Output Driven by Higher Capacity Utilization

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. weekly raw steel output recorded notable increase by 44.2% during the week ending on June 12, 2021, when matched with the comparable week in 2020. This is in accordance with the latest weekly domestic production statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

The U.S. weekly domestic raw steel output totalled 1.834 million net tons (NT). The domestic mill capability utilization rate was 82.60%. It must be noted that the production had totalled only 1.272 million NT at a much lower capacity utilization rate of 56.8% during the corresponding week a year before. However, the weekly crude steel production declined marginally by 0.3% over the week. The production was 1.840 million NT during the week ended June 5, 2021.

The cumulative adjusted year-to-date U.S. raw steel production totalled 41.380 million NT through the week ending on June 12, 2021. This is up by 13.2% from the production which totalled 36.564 million NT during the same period in 2020. The capability utilization rate too recorded notable jump from 67.8% to 78.5% over the year.

The leading producer was the Southern region, with an output of 794,000 net tons. The production by Great Lakes region stood at 627,000 net tons during the week. The production by other regions (in thousand net tons) is as follows: North East-143, Midwest-196 and Western-74.
