Sodra Targets Ten-Fold Boost in Pulp Mill Capacity

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Sodra plans fresh investment at its pulp mill at Morrum, Sweden, by which it aims to achieve ten-fold surge in production capacity at the facility. The investment will be in its proprietary OnceMore technology- the world’s first ever technology that enables industrial-scale recycling of textile waste of blended fibers. The new machinery will be commissioned in H1 2022.

The investment will boost Sodra’s production capacity of OnceMore pulp by nearly ten times, thus bringing the total capacity to 6,000 tonnes. Furthermore, it will boost the proportion of recycled textile in the pulp. In a bid to divert more textiles from landfills, the company had recently signed a joint agreement with fibre specialist Lenzing. The company had set a goal to process 25,000 tons of textile waste per year by 2025, which equates to 50,000 tons of pulp containing 50% wood and 50% post-consumer waste. This particular investment is the company’s second step towards its target.

Catrin Gustavsson, President of Södra Innovation Business Area commented that the investment will further improve textile recycling and maximise the value of the raw material from its members’ forests. It is a major step forward in creating a circular textile industry, Gustavsson added.
