SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa’s Sangüesa Paper Mill in Spain has joined hands with regional government authorities in celebrating the first annual European Paper Bag Day, launched by “The Paper Bag” platform this year. To mark the celebrations on Oct 18, the company promoted the use of paper carry-bags in place of plastic bags, as a means to educate consumers about the environmental benefits of paper carrier bags.

Smurfit Kappa mill, in partnership with the local Navarra Government supplied paper sufficient to produce nearly 130,000 paper bags. The paper is intended to be distributed through local shops, supermarkets and consumers across the Navarra region. The company noted that company’s high-quality paper portfolio is highly capable of producing effective paper bag alternative for environmentally dangerous plastic bags.

Isabel Elizalde, Navarra’s Regional Minister for the Environment commended the efforts undertaken by companies such as Smurfit Kappa for bringing about environmental difference through sustainable solutions for the future. The Minister, who undertook a tour of the company’s Sangüesa Paper Mill, also distributed paper bags to local shops in Sangüesa.
