Smurfit Kappa's Roermond Paper Mill Capacity Gets Major Boost

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recent series of upgrades at Smurfit Kappa Roermond Paper Mill have resulted in significant expansion of paper portfolio production capabilities. The company has made huge investments at its flagship paper mill in Netherlands over the past two years.

The upgrades to its Paper Machine 1 (PM1) included rebuilding of the winder. The press section, the drying section and the film press. Other enhancements at the mill included extension of the machine hall, installation of a state-of-the-art shoe blade gap former and a rebuild of the approach flow system. The integrated steam re-use system has resulted in increased optimization of energy usage throughout the mill.

Commenting on the upgrades, Laurent Sellier, COO of Smurfit Kappa Paper Europe noted that the investments have strengthened the company’s position as a leading provider of lightweight recycled paper grades. The company is committed to uphold sustainability values through development of innovative solutions, he said. Incidentally, paper-based packaging has been used extensively in both the e-commerce and retail sectors, he added.

Recently, the Roermond Paper Mill had reached a significant sustainability milestone by achieving notable reduction in carbon emissions from mill operations. Smurfit Kappa reported 3% decline in carbon emissions from the facility in 2018 alone. Ever since the introduction of the programme in 2005, it has been able to reduce specific CO2 emissions by nearly 23%.
