SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): European packaging major Smurfit Kappa has launched a new portfolio of innovative packaging solution. The new corrugated packaging portfolio is 100% recyclable, renewable and biodegradable. Most importantly, it eliminates the need for single-use plastic.
The first of the three products in the new portfolio is named Green Clip, which the company claims, is an alternative to the plastic rings currently used to group six packs of cans. It uses a corrugated alternative to bundle the cans and facilitates sale of single units.
The second product called TopClip is intended as a replacement for the stretch film that is used to bundle the cans in one single pack. The TopClip offers 100% protection from contamination as it fully covers the top of the cans. Furthermore, it is 100% plastic-free. It has two die-cut holes that make it easily handled in-store.

Another innovative product is the Nor-Grip, which is a sustainable paper-based alternative to shrink film that is used to bundle together large bottles such as soft drinks, cooking oils, bottled water and detergents.
Commenting on the portfolio, Arco Berkenbosch, Vice President of Innovation & Development at Smurfit Kappa noted that various tests have proved that the new products are at the top of the market, both in terms of convenience and sustainability. The company will focus on designing more sustainable packaging alternatives, in order to minimize the devastating impacts of single-use plastics on the environment.
