The project aims to provide heating solutions to homes, businesses and schools in the communities by capturing excess heat from the paper mill.

The press release noted that civil works on the project have already commenced, with the first trenches excavated and pipes laid in the month of June. The company plans to erect the central heat distribution building and equipment in the coming months. Once the new central heating network becomes fully operational, it will provide heating to households in the neighbouring villages of Kremsdorf, Haid and Ansfelden. The production process will save up to 21,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Gunter Hocrathner, CEO, Smurfit Kappa Nettingsdorf said that the project is another important step forward in advancing sustainability in the mill. By using waste heat from the mill to sustainably heat homes and businesses, the company anticipates to deliver significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of the surrounding district, he added.
