Smurfit Kappa Launches New Mineral Oil-Resistant Food Packaging

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Paper-based packaging major Smurfit Kappa has announced the launch of a new fully recyclable cardboard carton that meets all food safety standards. The new product is expected to help customers with the right packaging solution that suits their need.

According to sources, independent study by the Technical University of Dresden had recently noted that Smurfit Kappa’s MB12 carton was the most effective product currently available in the market, capable to protect packaged food against potential contamination. It is made using natural ingredients in recycled board and is 100% recyclable and sustainable. The product will be made available in a wide range of weights, the details of which will be announced soon. Also, MB12 protects against organoleptic effects of taste and odour into the food.

Lars Henriksson, VP Product Development, Smurfit Kappa Paper Division noted that the launch of the new product underlines the company’s ongoing commitment to meet diverse set of needs of its customers. Further, it reiterates that product safety continues to remain as the company’s top most priority. The unique MB12 packaging product is the result of innovations carried out by the company in developing sustainable solutions that not only meet all food safety standards but stand out from alternative products available in the market.

The food-safe MB12 carton for primary packaging is designed to prevent the migration of mineral oil into packaged food, thereby preventing the food against potential contamination. The mineral oil, harmful to human health, mainly originates from printing inks. The other key sources of mineral oil include food additives, processing aids and lubricants. Mineral oil migration has been a long-pending issue associated with cardboard food packaging solutions, with food packaging made of recycled paper and board reporting high levels of mineral oil hydrocarbons.
