Six Foreign National Women Arrested for Gold Smuggling at Indian Airport

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Six women were arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi for allegedly smuggling gold worth approximately INR 1.8 crore. The arrested include five women from Kenya and one from Sweden.

According to Customs Department officials, the passengers, who had come from Nairobi, Kenya via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, were intercepted upon suspicious behaviour. Upon detailed examination of the passengers and their luggage, the officials recovered 33 pieces of gold weighing nearly 3.9 kilograms. In addition they also recovered assorted gold jewellery and gold in the form of granule and dust. The weight of recovered gold totaled 6.2 kilograms, whose market value was estimated at around INR 1.78 crore.

In a separate incident, a Tajikistan national was arrested for allegedly smuggling gold through the same airport. The passenger was intercepted upon his arrival from Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Monday. Customs officials seized eight gold chains weighing approximately half a kilogram from the passenger.

Meantime, gold smuggling incidents are on the rise in other Indian Airports as well. Six cases of smuggling incidents were intercepted by Customs Department officials at Chennai International Airport. Altogether, 24-carat pure gold weighing 1.7 kilograms worth INR 57 lakhs were recovered from the passengers who had arrived at the airport mainly from Colombo and Kuala Lumpur.
