SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): U.S. Senator Rob Portman visited Cleveland-Cliff’s $1 billion Toledo Direct Reduction Plant, that produces hot briquetted iron through a natural gas-based iron reduction process. The press conference held after the visit was attended by the Senator and Cliff Smith, Executive Vice President, which highlighted Portman’s efforts to level the playing field for U.S. domestic steel producers.
Portman highlighted the support to steel industry and American jobs through his bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which will bring in investment of hundreds of billions into the country’s economy. Also, the Made in America provisions of the bill makes it mandatory that domestic steel must be used in federally funded transportation and infrastructure projects.
Furthermore, he highlighted the Leveling the Playing Field 2.0 bipartisan legislation introduced by him, aimed at strengthening the U.S. trade remedy laws and ensuring that they act as effective tools to fight back against unfair trade practices by China and other countries, thus protecting American jobs. He discussed a list of wide-ranging issues impacting the steel industry, especially issued related to trade.
