SDI La Farga Invests $16 Million in Expansion of New Haven Facility

SDI La Farga Invests $16 Million in Expansion of New Haven Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): SDI La Farga LLC- a joint venture between Steel Dynamics Inc., based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and The La Farga Group, based in Barcelona, Spain announced its decision to expand its Indiana copper recycling facility. The proposed investment of $16 million is expected to create approximately 30 new jobs in the New Haven region, said the company press release.

The New Haven facility currently houses one furnace for melting and refining of copper scrap. The investment will expand the processing capacity of the plant by adding a second furnace to the existing facility. This will boost SDI La Farga’s production capacity to at least 250 million pounds of copper per annum.

Commenting on the investment plan, Kurt Breischaft, President, SDI La Farga noted that the expansion will help the company better serve its customers in the Midwest region, especially in Indiana. Furthermore, it will deliver more efficient operations at the plant. The expansion will ramp up production and create more jobs in teh region, he added.

The company has already been offered up to $255,000 in conditional, performance-based tax credits from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC), which could be claimed after local hiring.  The Northeast Indiana Works has offered the company with hiring and training assistance. Also, the company expects additional incentives from the New Haven City Council. 

As per estimates, the global recycled metals market is expected to exceed $85 million by 2025.
