SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Several countries have released official scrap trade data for the month of August this year. As per data, scrap trade continued to exhibit mixed trend during the month.  

In accordance with South Korean trade statistics, the country’s import of scrap totaled around 560,000 tons in August this year, significantly higher by 23.7% when compared with the imports during the same month a year before. The South Korean scrap imports had totaled only 453,000 tons in August 2017.

The combined imports during the initial eight months of the current year totaled around 4.33 million tons, higher by nearly 11% from the corresponding period in 2017. The primary source of scrap import during Jan-Aug ’18 was Japan. The supplies from the country totaled around 2.86 million tons, accounting for nearly 66% of the total imports by South Korea during this period. The imports from Japan surged higher by 12% over the previous year. Russia (640,000 tons) and the U.S. (420,000 tons) were the other key import sources.

Meantime, statistics published by the Vietnam Department of Commerce suggests marginal year-on-year jump by 1.8% in scrap imports, which totaled around 485,000 tons in August this year. The cumulative imports surged higher by 21% to total around 3.5 million tons in the first eight months of 2018.

Brazil’s scrap exports have surged higher by 27% from the same month in 2017 to total around 25,000 tons in August 2018. The main export destinations were Bangladesh (10,400 tons) and Indonesia (6,250 tons).
