Scrap Trade by Asian Countries Exhibited Mixed Trend

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The scrap trade data published by Asian countries for the month of August denoted mixed trend.

According to data released by Vietnamese government agency, the country’s scrap imports totaled around 2.8 million tons during the period from January to August this year. The primary scrap supplier to Vietnam during this period was Japan. The supplies from Japan totaled around 1 million tons, accounting for nearly 35% of the total Vietnamese imports. The U.S. with supplies of around 600,000 tons constituted 31% market share. The other key sources of import were Hong Kong (390,000 tons) and Australia (270,000 tons).

Thailand’s Aug ’18 scrap imports have dropped significantly by more than one-third over the previous year to total around 190,000 tons. However, the combined imports surged higher by 10.6% over the previous year to total around 1.12 million tons during the eight-month period from January to August this year. The U.S. topped the list of scrap exporters with supplies of around 320,000 tons, accounting for just over 28% of the total scrap imports by Thailand during this period.

The scrap exports by Singapore declined by 14.2% in August 2018 to total around 60,000 tons. In Jan-Aug ’18, the country exported around 510,000 tons, slightly lower by 6% over the previous year. The key export destination, India, received around 150,000 tons, after dropping by nearly 8% over the previous year.
