Scrap Metal Recycler Fined for Waste Crime Offence

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A scrap metal recycler based in Hull has been fined for illegally transporting scrap metal without valid license. Daley Smith, 54, of Bankside Park, Bankside, Hull was fined £800 on waste crime offence. He was ordered to pay costs of £1,632 and a victim surcharge of £80.

The incidents occurred between 2 August 2019 and 21 January 2020.A total of nearly 50 tonnes of scrap material were illegally sold during this period. Smith received £5,887 in payment for the scrap metal, said Environment Agency officials, who had unveiled the illegal act during routine checks. The investigation was carried out by the Environment Agency, Humberside Police, DVSA and Highways England.

As per law, anyone who transports waste as part of their business is required to possess a waste carrier licence.

Iain Regan, waste regulatory specialist at the Environment Agency, said that the case sends out a strong message to all illegitimate business whose operations cause serious impacts on communities and the environment. The agency will continue to take action on such rogue operators who violate the environmental law for financial gains, he noted. Further, he urged households and businesses to ensure that they deal only with licensed waste carriers.
