SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): Rumpke Waste and Recycling formally announced that it will provide solid waste, recycling and compost collection for the city of Athens starting the first week of 2024. During a recent meeting, city council discussed the inequity in charges and the handling of current trash cans. It also held the second reading of the rates and received information about the switch to Rumpke.
Earlier this year, the council authorized the city administration to seek bids and enter into a contract with the lowest bidder. Rumpke will replace longtime solid waste management provider Athens Hocking Recycling Centers Inc. Rumpke will dispose of trash at the Athens Hocking Landfill and transport recycling to the Athens Hocking Recycling Center (AHRC) for processing. According to a statement from Rumpke, the company will service Athens from its hauling operation in Nelsonville and is hiring additional local employees to help service Athens and the surrounding area.
According to the rate ordinance, an owner-occupied unit with up to one 32-gallon trash container per week will pay $22.53 monthly. The current rate is $15.63. A one- to three-occupant rental unit will pay $22.53 for up to one 32-gallon container per week. The rate is currently $15.63. Everyone will pay a recycling support fee of $5.75. An optional composting charge for a five-gallon bucket will be $8.42 monthly. The ordinance includes a clause that for every 100 new customers added to the single container rate, there will be a 20-cent increase in all residential rates. In October, the city added 100 new customers with the increase effective on Dec. 1, 2023.
