Nigeria Recycles Only One-Tenth of its Plastic Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A recent research funded by the Japanese government indicates that Nigerians are less-focussed on recycling activities.

While addressing the inaugural meeting of the project steering committee for plastic circular economy project, Barr. Mohammed Abdullahi , Nigeria’s Minister of  Environment noted that only 45% of the waste is collected in the country. Nearly 80% of the total plastic waste ends up in dump sites. Most surprisingly, only around one-tenth is recycled. The poor plastic waste management is cited one of the primary causes for health challenges in Nigeria, the Minister said.

Nigeria’s plastic waste problem has only been rising over the past several years. The plastic consumption has recorded massive surge from levels of around 578,000 tonnes in 2007 to almost 1.25 million tonnes. The per capita plastic consumption has recorded annual growth by 5%.

The study report called upon the country’s administration to implement effective steps to boost recycling capacity, which in turn will reduce the leakage of plastics into the environment. Also, aggressive awareness campaigns, aimed at increasing the recycling awareness among citizens, could make a drastic change.

The piling plastic waste in the country is a major environmental issue that needs to be effectively addressed at the earliest, the meeting noted.
