Recycling Trade Body Honors Innovations in Plastics Recycling

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Washington-headquartered Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) has recognized innovators in plastics recycling. The companies who received the honors include Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) and its wholly-owned subsidiary NRT, Coca-Cola Co., Indorama Ventures, CKS Packaging Inc. and Italy-based FIMIC SRL. The winners were recognized during the Plastics Recycling 2018 event held recently in Nashville, TN.

The Eugene, OR-headquartered equipment supplier BHS and NRT were recognized for their artificial intelligence powered Max-Al technology which helps in identifying materials, making intelligent decisions and directing equipment such as robotic sorters. This ground-breaking technology offers operational efficiency of MRFs and PRFs at lower costs. Further, it also helps to produce more products that conform to higher purity standards.

The Coca-Cola Company, the world’s largest beverage company partnered with Indorama Ventures PCL and CKS Packaging, Inc. to convert its 89oz Simply Juice bottles into Indorama Ventures 5507 material, an APR-recognized grade with recycle code #1, categorizing it to be compatible with the PET recycle stream. The new product meets all recyclability requirements and is developed for use on shuttle extrusion blow-molding equipment.

The Italy-based FIMIC SRL was honored for its advancements in automatic self-cleaning melt filters, including the RAS and ERA continuous melt filters. RAS, with its unique scraping system guarantees filtration of any contamination type including metal pieces and sand. The ERA filets, to be introduced in 2018, offers double filtration chamber, thereby guaranteeing finer filtration and better output quality.

Steve Alexander, President, APR noted that the Association is grateful to this year’s innovators. Congratulating the winners, he said that the tremendous innovations happening across the packaging and equipment platforms will support the growth of plastics recycling.
