Recovered Paper Markets Registered Strong Start to 2021

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recovered paper market has opened on a strong note in 2021, said brokers and facility operators. The demand from paper mills across the globe continues to remain robust.

The demand for containerboard is at the peak that several mills are being sold out for up to six months. The demand for old corrugated containers (OCC) has been extremely strong, mainly on account of increased demand from e-commerce sector. The upcoming facilities will ensure increased use of OCC. The brokers shared extremely bullish outlook for corrugated during the initial six-month period of the current year. The box demand too has increased significantly.

The export markets for OCC have remained stronger than domestic markets, with increased demand for the material from countries in the Latin America and Asia region. The market pricing for mixed paper has surged higher from the year before. Although the pricing and demand for recovered paper grades are strong, the shipments are seen facing troubles due to shortage in availability of shipping containers. Many cargoes are being cancelled or delayed, sources said.

The Chinese controls on recovered paper imports have not disrupted global recovered paper markets. In a way, this has led to establishment of non-China markets.
