SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A series of new paper mills that are due to come online over the forthcoming years is likely to boost markets for recovered paper. The consumption of OCC and mixed paper is poised to register healthy growth. This is in accordance with the data compiled by the Vermont-based Northeast Recycling Council (NERC).
Between 2018 and 2023, a total of over 5 million tons per annum of new OCC and mixed paper consuming capacity and 1 million tons per annum of recycled pulp capacity are expected to become online. This will be on account of expansions and addition of as many as 28 paper mills during this period. Out of this, at least nine have already been completed. NERC said.
Meantime, Moore & Associates noted that mills in the region are aggressive in adding capacities to consume recovered paper, mainly on account of rising need for packaging materials. The brown packaging business has been witnessing steady growth over the past many years. The Covid-19 pandemic situation has boosted e-commerce business, as a result of which box demand has remained robust.
However, there are some announced projects that are unlikely to happen. This includes Shanying International’s project in Wickliffe, Kentucky, Total Recycled Fiber’s project in Chesapeake, Virginia, CorrVentures’ project in New York and Crossroads Paper’s project in Salt Lake City.
