QFC to Eradicate Single-Use Plastic Bags Beginning April 1

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): QFC- a division of The Kroger Co. will not offer single-use plastic bags to customers beginning April 1 this year. Instead, all QFC stores will feature reusable bag displays. For each reusable bag sold in the month of April, QFC will donate $1 each to the global non-profit ‘The Nature Conservancy’. It must be noted that QFC is the first Kroger subsidiary to phase out single-use plastic bags.

Earlier in August 2018, The Kroger Co. had announced that it will phase out use-once, throw-it-away plastic bags and transition to reusable bags in all its stores by 2025. Seattle-based QFC was selected as the company’s first retail division to implement the plan. The fight against plastics is part of the company’s Zero Hunger| Zero Waste initiative, which targets not only elimination of single-use bags but also elimination of food waste.

Mike Donnelly, Kroger's executive vice president and COO stated that the company always listens very closely to its customers and communities and that it agrees with their growing concerns. The decision to eliminate plastic bags is a sincere effort in its transition to more sustainable options. It demonstrates the company’s commitment to environmental protection, Donnelly added.

As per estimates, approximately 100 billion single-use plastic bags are thrown away in the U.S. every single year. Out of this, only around 5% are returned for recycling. The rest of the plastics end up in landfills or waterways.
