Police Group, Recycling Industry Join Hands to Combat Scrap Metal Thefts

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)- the world’s largest and most influential professional association for police leaders has called upon enforcement agencies to partner with the recycling industry in fighting metal thefts. The resolution passed recently by the Alexandria, Virginia-headquartered association recommends use of tools and resources developed by the recycling industry.

The resolution notes that scrap recycling industry has made concerted effort to work with law enforcement on metal thefts. It acknowledges the formation of a Law Enforcement Advisory Council and various other campaigns by the industry including metal thefts workshops and distribution of other educational materials to create awareness among public. Further, it recommends all law enforcement agencies to use web-based tools such as ScrapTheftAlert.com developed by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI).

Chief Paul M. Cell, president of the IACP stated that there has been a tremendous increase in the number and enormity of metal thefts. Effective fight against metal thefts requires cooperation and communication among all stakeholders. Joint effort by recyclers and law enforcement has always yielded success, he said. The resolution aims to promote partnership between recycling industry and law enforcement agencies, he added.

Meantime, Brady Mills, director of law enforcement outreach for ISRI assured that it will continue to build on its relationship with the IACP to ensure continued success.
