SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Prevented Ocean Plastic announced that it has reached a major milestone in plastic collection. The project has collected over 50,000 tonnes of plastic since its launch in 2019, thereby preventing approximately 2.5 billion bottles from ending up in oceans.
Prevented Ocean Plastic currently operates two collection centres in Indonesia. The first facility, located in the port city of Semarang, operates with the funding support of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), while the second in North Jakarta operates with the support of Singapore-based Circular Capital.
A total of 8 collection centres are currently under construction, with the two facilities in Indonesia slated to open this spring. It plans to open 25 high-capacity plastic collection centres by 2025, with a combined collection capacity of around 54,000 tonnes per year. Out of this, 20 will be high-capacity collection centres, whereas the remaining five will be bigger ‘aggregation centres’. The centres will be opened in various locations in Southeast Asia, South America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Mediterranean.
The programme is being implemented in partnership with leading plastics manufacturing companies and major global brands.
