Pilot Program Attained Fresh E-Waste Recovery and Recycling Milestone

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The TechCollect NZ pilot program in New Zealand has reached a major milestone by recovering and recycling more than 177 tonnes of electronic waste, ever since its establishment in November 2018. The program has helped households and small businesses in the country to responsibly recycle their end-of-life information and communication technology (ICT) equipment.

According to recent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the programme, recycling of every single tonne of ICT e-waste prevents over 2000 kilograms of carbon from entering the atmosphere, saves 28,347 mj of fossil fuel energy, saves 7.4 cubic metres of water and prevents over 3 kilograms of particulate matter from entering the atmosphere.

Michael Dudley, Senior Policy Manager, TechCollect NZ thanked TechCollect NZ’s members, partners, supporters and the communities across Aotearoa for helping it reach great heights. Also, he invited support from other like-minded businesses to further drive the effort, thereby making a real difference on the ground.

TechCollect NZ highlighted the environmental benefits associated with recycling ICT e-waste. It also emphasized the need to maximize the proportion of e-waste processed in the country.
