Pennsylvania Resources Council Partnership with City of Pittsburgh Enables Residents to Recycle 62 Tons of E-Waste in 2023

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): In 2023, a partnership between PRC and the City of Pittsburgh has enabled more than 2,000 residents to recycle 62+ tons of e-waste through the City’s hard-to-recycle program. During the past 12 months 2,181 City residents recycled 125,872 pounds of e-waste at the Environmental Services facility in the Strip District during weekly Tuesday/Thursday collections.

“We are happy to partner with the City of Pittsburgh to bring affordable and environmentally responsible electronics recycling to residents,” says PRC Deputy Director Sarah Alessio Shea.  “This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to sustainability and the proper disposal of electronic waste, which is crucial for minimizing environmental impact and promoting a circular economy in this region.”

At these collections, laptop computers and CPU (towers) are accepted at no cost.  Other items are charged $0.35 per pound.  Pittsburgh residents can visit www.prc.org/recyclePGH to register for electronic recycling and to view a complete list of materials accepted.

Shea explains that all electronic scrap collected is forwarded to eLoop LLC, an e-Stewards-certified processor that responsibly manages electronic waste.  “The public can feel confident that their material and data is being safely, ethically, and responsibly recycled when dealing with PRC and eLoop.”

Since establishing the PRC/City of Pittsburgh partnership in spring 2022, this program has more than managed 240,037pounds of electronics dropped off by 4,132 residents.
