MENOMONEE FALLS (Scrap Monster): According to the first sustainability report released by Kohl´s Department Stores, Kohl’s recycled 77% of all waste generated, a 4% increase over 2009.

According to report, 151,194 tons of cardboard, paper, plastics, wood, construction materials, metal, bottles, cans and electronics were recycled in the year 2010 as compared to 136, 873 tons in 2009.

In addition to recycling a majority of its waste, the company also worked with its suppliers and associates to reduce the amount of packaging used, and increase the units shipped per carton.

Also, the company has reached benchmarks for energy efficiency, green building design and operation and emission reduction.

As of December, nearly 600 stores earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency´s Energy Star label, and at least 100 stores are solar powered.
