Pandora Announces Complete Shift from Mined to Recycled Silver and Gold

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pandora- the leading Danish jewellery maker announced its decision to fully shift from mined to recycled silver and gold, as part of its sustainability commitment. Currently, nearly 71% of Pandora’s silver and gold jewellery comes from recycled sources.

According to company announcement, it will stop using mined gold and silver in its pieces with effect from 2025. Accordingly, it will limit its purchases to recycled sources. The shift to recycled supplies is likely to lead to significant reduction in carbon emissions. Rough estimates suggest that recycled supplies will help in reducing emissions by at least 66% for silver and more than 99% for gold.

The company noted that reusing of silver metal generates only a third of carbon emissions as compared with silver mining. Also, the emissions from recycled gold are 600 times lower than mined gold.

Alexander Lacik, chief executive officer, Pandora said that decision to shift to recycled sources is unlikely to affect the quality of the jewellery produced by it. However, it acknowledged that customers may need to be educated on the lack of difference between mined and recycled precious metals. The shift will result in significant reduction in water use on account of less mining, he added.
