PCA Declares Downtime at Jackson, Alabama Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  Lake Forest, Illinois-based Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) has announced plans to temporarily idle production at it Jackson, Alabama mill during the months of May and June this year.

Consequently, both paper machines and sheet-converting operations at the facility will be halted. The mill will restart operations during the first week of July 2020. This downtime will reduce the mill’s paper production by approximately 70,000 tons. Meantime, the International Falls, Minnesota paper mill will continue operations at capacity, the company press release noted.

The important business decision is necessary to manage its paper business during these challenging times, said Paul LeBlanc, Vice President of PCA’s subsidiary, Boise Paper. It is attributed to unprecedented market conditions on account of government measures to bring the COVID-19 pandemic under control.

According to LeBlanc, the idling will help the company to balance the supply of Boise Paper products with the reduced demand situation, especially due to fall in consumption of paper in schools, offices and businesses.

The idling of the mill will result in temporary layoff of nearly 340 employees. The HR team has already started meeting impacted employees.
