Ontario to Launch Innovative Skills Development Program in Forest Sector

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Ontario government has announced its decision to invest $5 million in the province’s forestry sector. The investment will focus on launching an innovative skills training project for the people in the Ottawa-Renfrew and Peterborough-Haliburton regions. The skills development program will be run in partnership with Algonquin College and Fleming College.

According to John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, the SkillsAdvance Ontario project will impart necessary skills to 150 jobseekers to equip them for a career in wood product manufacturing and production. The project will also assist 300 employed workers to upgrade their skills in order to advance their careers. Training will be provided in mill and manufacturing operations, field skills and heavy equipment training.

Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development stated that training programs are essential to its mission of helping people find good jobs. The project is good news for not only people and businesses, but also for the entire forestry sector. The funding will help employers to provide training to skilled workers and create job opportunities in the region. It plans to support similar innovative training projects in various communities across the province, he added.
