Oman’s Milestone E-Waste Recycling Facility Nearing Completion

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The region’s largest e-waste recycling facility is nearing completion in Salalah, Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman. As per media reports, the construction works are 85% complete. The plant will be opened before the end of 2018.

The Evergreen Gulf Recycling Hub (EGRH), being built on a site in Raysut Industrial Estate, Salalah, is the first large-scale integrated e-waste processing and recycling facility in entire Oman. The facility will be capable to handle the entire volume of electronic waste generated by the country. As per estimates, Oman generates nearly 45,000 tonnes of electrical and electronic waste every year. Currently, much of the discarded electronics devices end up in landfills or are shipped to neighboring UAE for further processing and recycling.

The proposed facility will accept a wide range of electronic and electrical devices including computers, monitors, printers, microwave ovens, television and music systems, all kinds of conventional and mobile phones, fluorescent bulbs, air-conditioner sets, cables, wires, motors, lead acid and alkaline batteries, and so on.

Salim Ahmed Qatan, Chairman, EGRH noted that the company’s longer term goal is to position itself as a one-stop destination for collection and processing of electronic waste from all governorates of the Sultanate. EGRH will co-operate with Be’ah to ensure responsible recycling of e-waste, which could lead to potential environmental hazards, if managed poorly, Qatan added.
