Novelis Announces Partial Closure of Scriba, New York Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Atlanta-headquartered Novelis, Inc. announced its decision to partially close its Scriba manufacturing facility in Oswego County, New York. In addition, the company has also decided to partially close its facility in Kingston, Ontario effective March 20th.

The decision follows the recent announcements by some of its major customers from the automotive industry to shut down operations due to growing coronavirus impacts. It must be noted that major automakers including Ford, General Motors and Fiat Chrysler had recently announced factory shutdowns at least until end-March, to help slow the spread of the deadly virus.

According to company spokesperson, both the plants will continue producing aluminium for the beverage can and other specialty markets. However, the supply to automotive market will be stopped temporarily. Not more than 25% of the company’s workers will be on-site, in accordance with the order issued by the Governor, Novelis said.

Meantime, the company noted that the closure of the plants is temporary. The situation will be monitored continuously and appropriate decision on facility restart will be taken after considering the evolving needs of the people, customers and the community.
