The Smart Press Shop Halle plant receives flat rolled aluminum products from Novelis’ Nachterstedt, Germany, plant. The production waste from SPS’s manufacturing process is transported back to the Novelis facility, where they are recycled and converted into high-quality rolled sheets. These sheets are then delivered to SPS, which are put back into the manufacturing loop by converting them into sustainable lightweight vehicle body parts. The proximity of the Halle plant to Nachterstedt plant reduces transportation time and costs, Novelis press release noted.

Incidentally, the partnership is expected to reduce overall carbon emissions by around 100,000 tons per year.

As per sources, the joint venture project has already reached supply agreements with premium car manufacturers focused on light-weighting. Also, efforts are on to extend the supply of light weight body parts to additional automakers.

Michael Hahne, Vice President, Automotive, Novelis Europe said that the partnership aims to advance the automotive industry closer to achieving the standards of a circular economy through sustainable material sourcing and production.
