SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Northern Pulp reiterated its commitment to transform the controversial Pictou County mill into one of the world’s cleanest and environmentally-friendly mills.
According to company press release, it plans to submit an Environmental Assessment (EA) registration document to the Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change by the end of next month, in order to commence a stringent two-year transformation process. The primary focus would be to use a science-based EA process in line with the community’s aspirations, said Graham Kissack, VP Environment, Health & Safety at Paper Excellence.

The company has been holding consultations with local communities and businesses, which had highlighted the need for a transformed mill in the region. It is awaiting environmental clearances for the construction to begin. The project will create around 600 jobs during construction phase and more than 300 direct and 2,500 indirect jobs once it becomes fully operational.
The transformation project will ensure that the facility emits no odours in local communities during operations. It will reduce visible plumes above mill by 70% and water consumption by almost 50%. The proposed new advanced wastewater treatment will ensure that water released is clean and transparent.
