Nigeria to Set Up Centralised Scrap Metal Dumps Across States

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): In a bid to combat environmental pollution due to illegal dumping of ferrous scrap metal, the Nigerian government announced plans to set up centralised scrap metal dumps in all the 36 states of the country. The project will be managed by a permanent committee, which has already commenced its operations.

Announcing the decision, Adeniyi Adebayo, Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment said that a permanent committee has already been set up to coordinate the setting up of centralised scrap metal dumps in all 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja.

The permanent committee is chaired by the Director, Industrial Development Department (IDD), Ministry of Industry, Nigeria. The primary tasks of the committee include interfacing with all the state governments with regards to allocation of land for the dumping sites and development of action plan for the operations of the centralised scrap metal dumping sites. In addition, it will also be responsible for proposing measures to eliminate smuggling and export of scrap metal and create a framework for educating local scrap metal collectors on the need to adopt the centralised scrap metal dumping site system.

The measures are aimed at preventing pollution, thereby ensuring the health of the population.
