New Trial Reward Scheme to Boost U.S. Electronics Recycling

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Currys has launched a new trial reward scheme to promote recycling of unwanted electronic items. The scheme titled ‘Cash for Trash’ allows consumers to trade these items at its stores in return for voucher. All Currys stores in the UK will be part of the campaign. The scheme will be open until April 15th, 2022.

The items with trade-in value that are dropped at stores will earn cash, discount on higher value products purchased or a Curry’s voucher. In exchange for their old television, customer will be offered discount of £100 on any TV over £1,000. Also, selected small appliances will be given up to £40 off, in exchange for old gadgets.

Lindsay Haselhurst, chief supply chain officer at Currys noted that the scheme will take its ongoing recycling efforts to the next level. The trial intends to make recycling easy and rewarding. It will accept electronic items purchased from anywhere, even if they are broken. The accepted devices would be handled responsibly and will be repaired, refurbished or recycled.

On an average, Currys collects approximately 5,500 tonnes of electronic and electrical devices every month. The ‘Cash for Trash’ trial will help the company to surpass the average monthly collection level.

The UK households and businesses contain around 527 million unused tech items, as per rough estimates.
