New Short Film Focuses on Lack of Awareness About E-Waste Recycling

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The new short film titled ‘Silicon Mountain: Reducing E-Waste One Furbished Laptop at a Time’ created by Plano, Texas-based The Vested Group highlights the problems associated with irresponsible handling of electronic waste. It refers to the impacts caused by e-waste due to lack of awareness among public on the need to recycle them. A string of recyclers, activists and government officials are part of the film, narrating the value of discarded electronic items.

Joel Patterson, founder of The Vested Group, who is also a co-producer of the film, said that the film will create awareness, which in turn would inspire consumers to be more conscious with their electronic goods. It advises customers about different available ways for consumers to get rid of their unwanted electronics that contain huge quantities of hazardous waste, thus protecting the planet. The film provides visuals from leading electronics recycling facilities across the country as well as various landfills.

Patterson noted that electronics recycling has not yet widely popular, upon comparison with recycling of other items such as plastic or paper.

As per U.S. EPA estimates, nearly 400,000 smartphones are discarded in the country every single day. Only around one-fifth of the country’s total e-waste is responsibly recycled, it said.
