SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Washington-based the American Chemistry Council (ACC) announced as set of proposals aimed at helping the U.S. Congress formulate a national strategy for addressing plastic waste menace. It proposes increased priority for improved recycling and reuse of used plastics, in addition to promotion of advanced plastic recycling technology and infrastructure.
The proposal urges the U.S. Congress to formulate a national recycled plastics standard that would make it mandatory for all plastic packaging to contain at least 30% recycled content by 2030. It directs the US EPA and DOE to create a national recycling framework for plastics in cooperation with municipalities and stakeholders of the entire plastic value chain. Thirdly, it recommends setting up of a regulatory system to enable rapid scaling of advanced recycling technologies, while giving due importance to mechanical recycling processes.
ACC proposes to have a comparative study of the impacts of various raw materials by the National Academy of Science and use the results of the study in formulating new policies. Furthermore, it suggests having a locally-designed and developed producer responsibility system for plastic packaging.
The successful implementation of the above proposals would lead to a circular plastics economy, said Joshua Baca, Vice President-Plastics, ACC.
